Grand Knight’s Message:

It has been an eventful month for us, and the next month will be no different.  We enjoyed great weather and great fellowship at our wonderful Annual family picnic at Louise Moore Park on August 15th.   At our August meeting we held a First Degree and accepted two new members into our Council: Matthew Potts and Ysais Martinez.  Welcome brothers!  We spent the month continuing to strive to do charity, as we do every month.   Charity is, after all, the watchword of our order.  Last fraternal year we raised and distributed thousands of dollars for numerous worthy recipients from ARC and the Special Olympics to individual needy families.  BUT TO CONTINUE TO DO THIS WE NEED YOUR HELP.  Our biggest fundraiser is our FOOTBALL EXTRAVAGENZA.  Please see information below on this worthy endeavor, and what you can do to help.  But doing charity does not always involve money, as we proved this past month when we were blessed to be given an opportunity to help a friend in need.  Additionally, we are working hard to honor Our Holy Father’s designation of this year as The Year for Priests by preparing an event for October 9th at St Francis Retreat House, Monocacy Manor, to which  you are all invited for an  evening of diner and fellowship with our priests.  Finally, and sadly, we bid farewell to our oldest and most beloved member, Brother Joe Petrilla.  Read further information about all of these events (some joyful some sorrowful, and one maybe even miraculous) elsewhere in this newsletter.

CHARITY

A few weeks ago a wonderful opportunity came our way.  We received a call that one of our brothers was, unbeknownst to us, ill and in need of help in the form of some physical labor, and needed it fast.  The call came from a relative who lived hundreds of miles away and couldn’t get here until the weekend.  She found us through our website.  Calls went out and within hours your brother knights were on the job.  When we finished up a few days later on the weekend, we met the relative who had called.  Although she thanked us profusely, we owed her the thanks, because without her phone call we would have never had the opportunity to be of service.  During our labors our rented U-Haul truck got stuck in a muddy back yard.  All our ingenious attempts at extrication failed until we thought to collectively pause, invoke St. Joseph the Worker and St. Jude and seek their intercession.  Sure enough we were unstuck minutes later.

If you know of a brother sick or in distress, please call us, so we can keep them in our prayers, and help in any other way.  If you know of other charitable work we might do, please call and suggest it to us.  It’s our mission.

BROTHER JOE

On September 7th our oldest member, JOSEPH PETRILLA, passed on to his just reward at the age of 92.  Brother Joe was as devoted, dedicated, and hard-working a Knight as there ever was, and performed many works of charity over and above his labors on behalf of our Council.  One of our most tireless and prolific recruiters, many of you reading this are one of us because of him.  We pray that his wife, daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren may be comforted in their loss, and for the happy repose of his soul.  We shall miss him.

October 9th Event

In March Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed the “Year for Priests” beginning June 19, 2009.  To help us celebrate this event we are co-hosting a dinner with the Serra Club for all our members and our honored invited guests, the priests of the community we serve.  For an evening of fellowship with your priests join us OCTOBER 9, 2009 at St. Francis Retreat House.  The menu will be Broiled Dill Glazed Salmon with Rice Pilaf and Beef Tips Burgundy with Wild Mushroom Sauce.  Cost will be $20 per person.  We will have Mass in the beautiful Retreat House chapel at 5:30PM followed by a brief reception and dinner starting at 6:30PM.  We chose Columbus Day weekend to honor our Order’s namesake Christopher Columbus and also our founding priest Venerable Father Michael J. McGiveney.  Come join us. Call Brother Ed Ortelli at 610-317-6349
